Where we work

There is a Red Cross or Red Crescent in 181 countries - almost every country in the world. This enables us to reach people in crisis - whether they’re flood victims in Bangladesh, orphaned children in South Africa or refugees fleeing conflict in Sudan.

More than a million people have been displaced since conflict erupted in Darfur, some 200,000 of them having fled to neighbouring Chad, but the majority of them are living a precarious existence within the Sudanese province. The Red Cross is at the forefront of humanitarian action, providing vital relief, supporting health facilities and reuniting separated families.

The Bay of Bangal experiences some of the worst cyclones on earth. But thanks to more than 30,000 local Red Crescent volunteers, Bangladesh is better prepared than ever. Alerted by radio and equiped with hand-held sirens and megaphones, volunteers can make sure that everybody knows there is a cyclone on the way. The success of this programme was shown during the 1997 cyclone, when fewer than 200 people died, compared to 138,000 in 1991. This is just one of many disaster preparedness programmes we support around the world.
On a global scale, we respond to the growing HIV/AIDS pandemic by signing our own declaration to tackle the disease at home and abroad. In southern Africa, where many children are orphaned by the disease, we respond by dedicating our efforts to finding ways to help orphans and other vulnerable children cope.
