What we do

The Red Cross responds to disasters and conflicts around the world. From earthquakes to floods, conflicts to terrorist attacks, the Red Cross is there, providing help to those who most need it.

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, we provide first aid, medical care, water, food, shelter and other relief goods. In the longer term, we help reunite families who have been separated by conflict or disaster. The Red Cross also helps prepare communities to cope better with disasters in the future.

The Red Cross restores contact between those who have been seperated from their relatives by conflict and disaster, through our international tracing and message services. We reunite on average, one family every day.

In the UK, the British Red Cross can call on 35,000 trained volunteers to deliver a wide range of services from first aid training to emergency response, loaning medical equipment to helping people who have returned home from hospital.

Eruption leads to exodus. Mount Nyirangongo, near Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, erupted in January 2002. leading to a massive exodus of people into nearby Rwanda. Our logistics specialists flew into Kigali within days, and for the next month coordinated all Red Cross relief flights into the town.
The British Red Cross responds to hundreds of emergencies in the UK every year and are included in local authority emergency plans for every county. We have a special role to play in supporting the emergency services in their response to humanitarian crises. We are setting up emergency response teams across the UK.
